Why Serious Games Shouldn't Be Taken Seriously
From TechSource Gaming Symposium
Presenter: Thom Kevin Gillespie (Creator and Director of the MIME program in the Department of Telecommunications at Indiana University)
Description: Every media since cave drawings has promised to revolutionize learning and education and in almost all cases the media eventually becomes the leading form of entertainment of its time and has little direct impact on learning and education. Games have been around since the time of cave painting and their recent incarnation as computer games is almost 40 years old but suddenly ‘serious’ games are the rage of academia. For me great games are serious but few serious games, I see trumpeted, are great games which creates a conundrum I’ll attempt to resolve in a 45 minute multiple-choice quiz leading to the top 10 things librarians can do with games and game players in their libraries.
Intended Audiences:
- Pretty much any librarian
