Description

In Fall of 2006 San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science purchased 16 acres of virtual space in Second Life. With a summer class scheduled and plans to expand the schedule for Fall, SJSU is at the leading edge of a growing movement to offer real world lessons in this new distance learning mode.

This session will cover SJSU's process for building the 3D environment and the design heuristics for creating learning tools in a setting where avatars fly and distance is irrelevant.

The session will touch briefly on opportunities for developing programs for ages 13-17 in the "Teen Grid."

Information science professionals will see how Second Life brings in live information from Web databases and models that data in walkable settings and manipulable objects. The session will demonstrate Second Life's portals for email and streaming video as well. When participants finish this session they will be well prepared to enter the environment themselves, how to find other library professionals doing amazing things and have some ideas for how to bring their organization in as well.

You may be a 'Lifer if you...

  • have a broadband connection and relatively new hardware
  • are VERY comfortable in Web 2.0 and new media settings
  • are not daunted by very complex interfaces
  • have a can-do attitude for solving computing issues
